Ontologies express concepts and relationships between concepts in a formal language. They are used to exchange knowledge in digitalized and formal form between people and computers, people and people, and computers and computers. Existing knowledge is thus networked over time. The use of ontologies is an essential guarantee for the understanding of the content of data and services and enables their comprehensive interoperability. By formalizing knowledge in a machine-executable form, technical services such as search and data integration are supported.
The 4DS Ontology describes various terms for resources (data sets, people, projects and other units). It is based on the NFDIcore Ontology and is compared with the well-known Basic Formal Ontology (BFO).
